The Death Midwife builds a bridge from this world to the next.
I've created a blog to give voice to the dying. So very often, in this mysterious transition we call death, their voice is lost. So I will endeavor to speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves. In this blog, I will speak on issues, difficult issues, concerning the dying, the death process and our cultural avoidance of death. I’ll embellish upon concepts in my book and I’ll shine a light on things concerning death that we have preferred to keep in the shadows. A lot of what is said may be difficult to listen to…but I hope you will allow your heart to hear.

From August 26, 2009, in interview with WNIS Hampton Roads radio host Tony Macrini. This interview came about in a rather interesting way. While driving to a doctor’s appointment one morning, I was listening to one of our local radio talk show hosts. He was talking about home burials and green funerals and the topic of death midwives was broached. In the sardonic way of radio hosts, he exclaimed, “What? Can’t we even die alone anymore?”I was struck by this for a couple of reasons. Not only was I hearing the term “death midwife” actually used in mainstream consciousness but also, jokingly asked or not, I wanted to address his question. So, I emailed him, telling him that, no, in truth, no one dies alone regardless of outer appearances. I went on to introduce myself and my work to him and he asked for in interview. He was gracious and polite, though undoubtedly biting back some smart-alecky comments. All in all, it was very heartening to be able to discuss death midwifery with the mainstream media.
